When you start to get more than a couple of computers in your office, or when you start thinking about how you're going to access your files and emails when you're on the road, it can be time to think about getting a server.
A server is a computer which you set up and leave running all the time. The most common uses of a server are to allow sharing of files and printers. This means that potentially everyone in your company can have a central place to store files; and that instead of having lots of printers, you can just have one or two which everyone uses via your network.
Another advantage of having a central computer for your important business files is that it makes it easy to backup your data. Instead of having to go from computer to computer and find the important files, it can all be backed up automatically on the one computer. See also document protection.When the server's also connected to the Internet, you can remotely access your email and files, say from home or while you're travelling overseas, directly from the computer where you're located.
